New milestone reached as Polar Connect receives additional EU funding

The Grant Agreement for Polar Connect Step 2 (24-EU-DIG-PC2) has been signed, marking another major milestone in developing Polar Connect – a resilient Arctic submarine cable system linking Europe, North America, and East Asia for the benefit of the global internet.

Polar Connect Step 2 (PC2) builds on the strong foundation and momentum established through earlier EU co-funded projects within the Polar Connect initiative. As the initiative moves towards implementation, PC2 will focus on the Cable Route Study, while also advancing the financial planning and ownership models. These efforts are an essential step to shape viable investment framework and attract strategic partners and commercial investors for building this critical digital infrastructure.

From seabed mapping to operational readiness in the Arctic

A central focus of PC2 will be the Cable Route Study and additional Arctic seabed mapping missions for the advanced Arctic route data simulations. These activities will define the optimal and secure path for laying the Polar Connect submarine cable. PC2 results will provide the necessary information required by cable manufacturers to carry out the final marine survey and proceed with manufacturing and eventually laying the cable.

As preparations move forward, PC2 will be addressing operational challenges in the Arctic, diving into cable repair and maintenance scenarios in harsh and icy conditions. This work supports the long-term reliability and accessibility of the future submarine cable system and contributes to growing European expertise.

Co-funded by the European Union

24-EU-DIG-PC2 is co-funded by the European Commission through the Connecting Europe Facility (CEF Digital) 2 programme. Within this programme, the Commission supports initiatives that strengthen the European Union’s digital autonomy, including the development of fibre-optic connections between the EU and third countries in ways that ensure European stakeholders maintain control over the infrastructure. The funding awarded to PC2 supports continued progress towards establishing a secure and strategically important Arctic route for international connectivity.

Partnering for a sustainable digital future

The project reflects a collaborative effort between European stakeholders and global partners, reinforcing Europe’s leadership in establishing secure, sustainable digital infrastructure for the future. The PC2 beneficiaries include the Swedish Polar Research Secretariat, NORDUnet, GlobalConnect, CSC, and the Swedish Research Council (the project coordinator). In addition, GÉANT is supporting the project as an Associated Partner.

Together, the partners now take the next coordinated step towards realising a new Arctic connection designed to provide a robust, secure, and sustainable foundation for future data communication, with the potential to strengthen research, innovation, and digital trade for years to come.
