North Pole Fiber Presented at EGU 2025

From April 27 to May 2, 2025, Julia Muchowski from the Swedish Polar Research Secretariat participated in the EGU General Assembly 2025 in Vienna, Austria.

During the event, Julia Muchowski presented Polar Connect and the North Pole Fiber project at a well-attended poster session, helping to raise awareness of the initiative among a broad audience. Her presentation focused in particular on the scientific community’s need for advanced sensing technologies in the Arctic.

The conference provided valuable insights into what researchers aim to measure in the Arctic, while also offering inspiration regarding potential applications and technological developments in fibre-optic sensing. Julia established many new contacts with researchers and experts in the field.

About the EGU General Assembly 2025

The EGU General Assembly 2025 brought together scientists, infrastructure providers, as well as other public and private stakeholder s from around the world for a conference encompassing all disciplines of Earth, Ocean, Planetary, and Space Sciences. Participants were exposed to the latest research in areas such as planetary exploration, Earth observation, polar science, climate change, pollution, and natural hazards. Especially notable were the contributions from researchers working with fibre optic sensing technology, a rapidly growing and important field.

The goal of EGU is to provide an open platform where scientists, particularly those in the early stages of their careers, can present their work and exchange ideas with experts from across the geoscience community.

This year’s conference had 20,984 registered participants, with 18,646 attending in person in Vienna from 120 countries, and 2,338 joining online from 104 countries. A total of 18,934 presentations were delivered across 1,102 sessions – a clear testament to the scale and significance of the event.
